After years of requests from players across the world, it seems like Sony is finally opening its arms to crossplay across multiple platforms, starting with Fortnite! While crossplay has been available between PS4 and PC, it had gotten to a stage where players had accepted that they may never see play with Xbox gamers.
Announced on their PlayStation blog, however, the company revealed that they have “identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content.” What does this mean? PlayStation will be supporting an open beta for Fortnite that is to allow cross-platform gameplay, progression and commerce across the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, PC, Mac and mobile. The beta was launched today.
This is a huge moment for Sony who has vocalised many times that they had no interest in crossplay.
“We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective,” they write.
“This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organisation to support this change”.
This news is still developing but is undoubtedly a massive welcome for Fortnite players. Will the company introduce more crossplay options for the future? We can hope.
